December 2009

Thank you so much for contributing to the 2nd Annual “Christmas in July” fundraising event held Saturday, July 11, 2009. We had a great time for a great cause! With your help, we again were able to provide assistance to 15 households through the Flanner House Utilities Program. Further, the toiletries, men’s clothing, canned goods, and school supplies were an awesome way to “give back” to help those in need. Those items were delivered to the Homeless Initiative Program at 1835 N. Meridian, and they were most appreciative to receive them. Thank you!

At our event, LaVada Clark welcomed our guests, followed by Millicent Williams, who captured the essence of why we come together to celebrate “Christmas in July.” Vicki’s birth month is July, and her favorite holiday was Christmas. We come together to fellowship and to give to others as Vicki gave unto us. We believe those who never met Vicki feel her spirit through us as we celebrate and honor her life.

After the blessing of the food by Charles Clark, Sr., and a delicious dinner, we engaged in a fun exercise where everyone at each table came up with things they had in common - - then they reported the commonalities. It was hilarious! The Live Auction was also a blast! There were lots of great items, and plenty of fun competitive bidding going on.

The VICKI award was presented to Delores “Sugar” Poindexter for her many years of outstanding community leadership. She was the first African-American woman to host a gospel show on radio station WTLC, and the first to broadcast live from the Indiana Women’s Prison. On Thanksgiving Day, for 20 years straight, Sugar invited various recording artists to join her at the Marion County Jail where they would entertain and spread the gospel, bringing hope and inspiration to those who were incarcerated. We salute Ms. Sugar Poindexter for her legendary outreach and service. Sadly, just a few months later, on September 15, Sugar passed away from colon cancer. Let us continue to keep her family in prayer.

It’s not too early to nominate someone for the 2010 VICKI award. If you know of someone who has done or is doing something good for the Indianapolis community, please nominate them for the VICKI award. Enclosed is a nomination form or go to www.faithfamilyandfriends.net.

The evening ended with a wonderful toast by Julie Miller. She thanked attendees for their contributions, particularly now during tough times, and extended a special toast in honor of Vicki and in salute to each and every one of you!

Please check out the great photos from Christmas in July 2009 at www.faithfamilyandfriends.net,

We would like to begin collecting “Vicki stories”, so if you have a story to share about Vicki, please send an email to toni@faithfamilyandfriends.net, or mail it to LaVada Clark, 4010 Eagle Cove Ct., Indianapolis, IN 46254. The story does not have to be long, in fact, short is good. It can be funny, sad, good, or bad. It can be about anything from how you and Vicki met, to how much you miss her, to wising you had met her. There will be a special token for the first five stories received, so go for it!

We encourage you to visit the website from time to time for information; updated photos, or to make a donation. Donations are accepted and appreciated anytime during the year. You can also post your comments or ask questions. Please let us know if there is anything we can do better or different.

Again, we thank you for your support. We are so happy to host this annual event as we love seeing our family and friends come together in celebration of life and in the spirit of giving. May God bless and keep you and your family safe, healthy, and happy. We hope to see you at next year’s Christmas in July, on Saturday, July 10, 2010.

Hope you enjoy our special 2009 Christmas in July CD which was handed out at the event!!! HAPPY HOLIDAY’S!

Sincerely,

LaVada Clark     Toni Williams
